Jena

After touring Erfurt, we drove to Wittenberg.  We detoured a little out of our way to drive through Jena and stop at the Jena 1806 Napoleon battlefield museum.

This is the museum.  It was very small.  The elder gentlemen attendant didn't speak English, and nothing had English text I could read.  So I didn't get too much from the museum.

The twin battles of Jena and Auerstedt were fought on 14 October 1806 on the plateau west of the river Saale in today's Germany, between the forces of Napoleon I of France and Frederick William III of Prussia. The defeat suffered by the Prussian Army subjugated the Kingdom of Prussia to the French Empire until the Sixth Coalition was formed in 1813.

Several figures who were later integral to the reformation of the Prussian Army participated at Jena–Auerstedt, including Gebhard von Blücher, Carl von Clausewitz, August Neidhardt von Gneisenau, Gerhard von Scharnhorst, and Hermann von Boyen.

There was this map which wasn't very useful.

And there was what looked like it might be a hiking trail but of no use.

What I realized is that when a country loses a battle on their home soil, they are not inclined to put much effort into remembrance of that battle.  The Prussians lost the battle of Jena-Auerstadt to Napoleon.
